Identifying Local Opportunities

Hoarding disorder increases anxiety
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/16996EEEB12FF310?p=WORLDNEWS

Story: A wife married to her husband for four years is considering leaving her husband since he has growing hoarding tendencies and is now refusing to get rid of old things or renovate his mother's old house. The wife is concerned about her husband but at the same time was told by the husband that if she doesn't like his hoarding tendencies that she can just leave.
Problem: The problem is the hoarding tendencies of the husband and the effect that this has on the people around him. The hoarding causes him to be unable to get rid or change things of the past since he feels like he is losing something very valuable to him even if others may see the object as simple trash.
Who: The husband has the hoarding problem but this causes a problem for the neighbors and his wife. His refusal to get rid of trash makes his wife uncomfortable in her own home and his refusal to speak to a contractor about fixing or renovating the house is causing a problem for the neighbors in the housing market.

Jurors were bullied into convicting cop, letter says
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/16996EEE75241C58?p=WORLDNEWS

Story: A jury member came forward explaining that he along with other members of his jury were bullied into a guilty verdict by other members of the jury. The juror explains how even with no evidence that the jury came to a guilty conclusion because members of the jury had an ill will towards police officers and some felt that someone had to pay for the injustices done. The police officer had been tried before but there was no evidence that anything he had done in this case had been wrong according to the testifying juror and they are currently hoping for more members of the jury to step forward and agree that there was bullying going on.
Problem: The problem is that members of a jury were bullied into making a verdict that they did not necessarily agree with or even have a reason for making other than preconceived notions going into the case.
Who: The police officer and other people who may have been falsely accused are the victims of this problem. Jury members bullying each other removes the fact that the verdict is supposed to be determined based upon evidence rather than preconceived notions.

Toys R Us to close three South Florida stores
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A6E4FE6BE26E0?p=WORLDNEWS

Story: Toys R Us is closing three of its South Florida stores due to it facing severe financial problems. The competition from other brick and mortar stores along with online realtors such as Amazon has caused Toys R Us to lack in profits and has the forced closing of some of it stores. Toys R Us will try and keep some of these stores open if they can negotiate cheaper leasing options although this seems very unlikely. Approximately 25 employees work at each individual Toys R Us store.
Problem: Over 25 employees will be losing their job per store along with Toys R Us leaving the market and toy industry in the areas that it is being forced to close down.
Who: The employees along with Toys R Us have the problem of not making enough profit causing Toys R Us to have to let go of some of it stores along with that stores employees. The employees will now be jobless and in today's job market that is not a good position to be in.

Opioid bill advances in House despite some doctors' worries
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/1699C4289C330A38?p=WORLDNEWS

Story: A bill was recently passed by the House that is designed to halt the opioid epidemic that has started to plague South Florida. Some doctors disagree with the bill as they find it impractical to limit the length of some patients' prescriptions. Putting a strict number day limit in an effort to stop the growing costs and deaths caused by opioid addiction also comes with a draw back as now people with prescriptions are going to have to spend a lot more money refilling the same prescription multiple times over the course of a month.
Problem: The first problem is the opioid epidemic that is severely affecting South Florida. The second problem is caused by the attempted solution for the first now causing prescriptions for some patients with chronic pain to be filled out multiple times within a months time.
Who: The people who have the problem are the people addicted to opioids since it often leads to death. Another is the hospitals who have to spend billions of dollars relating to opioid health related costs. The last people with the problem are the patients who now have to spend more money and time filling out their much need prescriptions due to the new bill launched by the House.

Forming an Opportunity Belief

Opportunity:
In my opinion there is an unmet need for WiFi on the UF RTS bus system. If you do not have unlimited data it hurts to have to use LTE on the bus ride from my apartment onto campus. Not only does it hurt having to use some of my data but it also hurts when the coverage at certain areas is not very good and that causes things to load slowly onto my phone. Along with giving WiFi to phones it would also open up the possibility to use laptops on the buses on the way to class. This provides an opportunity for students to do extra work for 15-20 minutes instead of just sitting idly. This need exists for all students even those with bus systems at other colleges than UF. This solution will allow students to take advantage of all their precious time as possible and therefore leaving more time for things after work is done. Not only would students benefit from this but also the everyday consumer along with teaching staff at the campuses.

Interview 1: Student at FAU, age 20

Does this problem exist and affect you?
Yes it affects me almost everyday of the week and drives me absolutely crazy. I purchased an iPhone X but don't have unlimited data so it really sucks when my carrier slows down my speeds because I have used all the data for the month.
When do you notice the need?
I notice it every single time I ride the bus and I have to use my LTE data instead of being able to connect to a WiFi signal.
How long have you had this need?
Almost everyday since I started school back in 2016 and have had this same problem ever since considering I still take the bus around campus.
How are they improving this need?
FAU isn't improving the problem at all seeing as they don't even see the current situation as a problem with the transit system.
What do you think of the suggested solution?
I think this is a much needed solution to a very obvious problem afflicting the transit system. If buses added WiFi I would be able to conserve much more data on my phone and be able to not worry about any overage charges.

Reflection:
Ben's response was very similar to my own in that he found it obnoxious having to waste data while using the bus on the way to class throughout the day. He helped to identify that there is a need for this solution and that many other students would support this idea in an effort to bring about a more connected bus line.

Interview 2: Student at Ave Maria, age 20

Does this problem exist and affect you?
All the time! I hate when I am on the bus and I am unable to use my laptop cause there is no internet connection and my phone hot spot doesn't have enough data to work. I wish I could use my laptop during my rides back and forth from campus.
When do you notice the need?
Whenever I want to watch a video or lecture on my laptop during the bus ride and I can't cause there is no connection. I also notice it when my phone starts to buffer when I am watching videos cause I entered a dead zone.
How long have you had this need?
I have needed it for about seven years now since I have ridden a type of bus to get to school pretty much my whole life and it stinks when I can't watch the videos that I am really without them buffering during the best parts.
How are they improving this need?
You know they really aren't and it is really starting to annoy me. I am tired of not being able to connect to an internet connection in between destinations.
What do you think of the suggested solution?
This is an awesome idea and it would be about time that I can do what I please on the bus without having to worry about buffering or a non-existent internet connection.

Reflection:
Chris seemed really annoyed by the fact that he couldn't watch his favorite videos without them either not being able to be played on the laptop or buffering during the climax on the phone. He was really adamant about the school adding WiFi to the buses so he can finish whatever he is doing uninterrupted by the lack of WiFi or LTE restrictions.

Interview 3: Student at UF, age 21

Does this problem exist and affect you?
Yes, this problem is very prevalent today. As someone who rides the bus daily to class, the lack of WiFi on the RTS system affects me daily.
When do you notice the need?
I notice the need when I am on the bus, but especially on very busy days when I would like to use the time during my commute to accomplish tasks such as completing homework or answering emails.
How long have you had this need?
I have had this need since I began riding the bus on a regular basis in my sophomore year. For the past 2 years I have been suffering through this problem.
How are they improving this need?
I do not believe that they are addressing this problem at all. It seems to me that the RTS bus system is more concerned in getting us from point a to point b rather than providing a joyful riding experience.
What do you think of the suggested solution?
I believe that this would be a perfect solution to the bus system. With added WiFi, the tasks that I have found to be arduous in the past will become easier to accomplish without having to rely on a cellular connection. Additionally, I believe that this solution will make my riding experience more enjoyable.

Reflection:
Nick found the problem to be most present to him in that it got in the way of him completing his homework on the bus. A lot of time can be saved in a very overloaded work schedule and the 40 minutes wasted sitting on the bus could instead be turned into a productive hour of work.

Conclusion:
I am not the only one who thinks that the bus systems at universities need to implement a WiFi system of sorts onto the bus. Different people need the WiFi on the bus for differing reason but the result is that all three of the people I talked to all said that WiFi is a much needed addition for buses to acquire whether it be for completing homework that would otherwise cut into social time or even for being able to watch a video during the ride. I really believe that UF should set itself apart from other universities by raising the standard and adding on-board WiFi onto the RTS transit system.

Your Entrepreneurship Story

My first experience involving entrepreneurship came about from my mom trying to start her own business along with my aunt and uncle. Her startup company was named GoGetter and it was a T-Shirt company aimed towards what they called GoGetters or though who attempted to reach beyond the norm and achieve new heights and also those looking for higher quality shirts made from real materials. They jumped head first into the T-Shirt business even though non of them had any experience in this field and had very little knowledge on what was needed to get a new brand name across to people. Even though they were inexperienced they went ahead and made a major purchase of a T-Shirt printer used for adding designs onto shirts and sunk serious money into a brand new business. They started by establishing the goal of their brand and what audience to target with their new T-Shirt product. Then they moved onto hiring a graphic designer to help design a logo for their company that helped to represent what a GoGetter was. Next the website for the company had to be created along with key terms to help the website pop-up on google searches to help with the visitor count. The main problem they fell into was the price of the shirts to purchase was just too high and resulted in a high listing price on the website resulting in low sales. Another huge factor that plagued the company over and over was the fact that the T-Shirt printer had numerous problems with it and also did not print out everything that my mother wanted since it could not print some colors onto others resulting in a limited selection. In order to make money on the side my mom was forced to print mass T-Shirt orders for field trips or school trips in order to help with the printer payments and inventory costs. The GoGetter shirts just did not sell and eventually my mom had to give up on the company and bite the bullet of all the costs that she had sunk into the business. Not only did my mother but I also learned a lot from her attempt at entrepreneurship and I will surely bring this with me into future endeavors.

I enrolled into ENT 3003 to gain valuable knowledge that I can bring with me into adventures I may take in the future. Eventually I wish to be able to start up something by myself and profit from my own creativity or ingenuity and I believe this class will help me achieve these goals through giving me invaluable experience. I hope to learn the dos and don'ts of entrepreneurship and what to center my focus on when looking for an opportunity in the world and the tools I need to pounce on said opportunity. I also hope to learn more about myself and my own personal goals that I want to achieve. By the end of this class I hope to have a clear understanding of what entrepreneurship is and the necessary actions that need to be taken in order to help a starting idea bloom into a full blown and successful business opportunity for myself.

Bug List

20 Bugs List

1. Bug: When it is late at night and I want to grab a McFlurry the employees at McDonalds always say the machine is broken.
Why: It is most likely because the machine is not actually broken but that the employees don't want to work the Flurry machine since it may be difficult.

11. Bug: The bus schedule gets very congested to the point where three different buses are only a couple of minutes apart from each other resulting in some waits entering the 30+ minutes.
Why: Traffic may cause this situation or the breaks the drivers may take may cause the buses to become to close to each other.

12. Bug: The stores in Coral Springs where I am from stop selling alcohol at 10 pm and of course whenever me or my friends need to buy more it is pass the selling time.

Why: Some think that this makes them look better or maybe makes the devices easier to produce.

16. Bug: Companies somehow receive your number and proceed to spam call your phone even though you did not give them the number or have any desire to participate in their product or service.
Why: The companies are trying to promote their product or service through means of spam calling a list of phone numbers they obtain from various methods.

17. Bug: When your iPhone you have had for 1-2 starts to slow down dramatically out of nowhere after an update that your phone downloads.
Why: Apple is looking to make more money off of its products by making their customers upgrade their phones after their old ones begin to slow down too much.

18. Bug: No toilet paper in a public stall when you really need some toilet paper.
Why: The employees may not have checked the status on the toilet paper rolls in a while or they may be currently out of toilet paper.

19. Bug: I lend out money to a friend of mine and then never get that money paid back to me until I eventually forget about the money.
Why: I can only keep track of how much money a person owes me for so long and the person who owes money may have forgotten as well.

20. Bug: A poster is hung up on a wall and one of the sticks tacks fails resulting in a side of the poster to fall and ends up giving a rip in the poster which can never be unseen once you know it is there.
Why: The poster is not made of strong enough material to resist the force of it falling from a height.

Challenges: It was hard to come up with the last ten bugs that I find in my everyday life since they are often so easily ignored once they occur since they would cause stress if they weren't removed from my mind. While 20 bugs did not sound like a lot of bugs to write about it ended up taking a lot of effort and hard thought to come up with 20 ideas and being able to explain why they occur.
